
Being proud of our children is important, and professional childcare, youth sports, dance, arts, and many more activities provide the needs and interests for Fort Leavenworth’s youth and parents. Fort Leavenworth Schools USD 207, which boasts a superior reputation nationwide, is part of the Kansas State Department of Education.
Children of military personnel who live on-post attend Fort Leavenworth schools for kindergarten through ninth grade. Eisenhower, MacArthur and Bradley Elementary Schools are the neighborhood schools for students attending Kindergarten through grade six. Students in grades seven through nine attend Patton Junior High School.
Senior high school students attend Leavenworth High School, which is part of the city school system. Fort Leavenworth provides bus transportation to and from the high school for post residents.
When students live off post, they will find a number of public and parochial schools that vary in size, opening and closing dates, fees, curriculum and other details. You can learn more about area school facilities and enrollment from the board of education of the school district in which you will reside. (Area schools’ addresses and phone numbers are included later in this section.)
Age Requirements for Kindergarten. A child who is five years old on or before Aug. 31 of the school year is eligible for kindergarten in Kansas. Any child who attended an accredited kindergarten in another state is eligible to attend kindergarten in Kansas.
A child who will be six years of age on or before Aug. 31 of the school year is eligible for first grade. Any child who completed a kindergarten course in Kansas, or who attended first grade in another state, maintained by a public school district or by a state accredited private, denominational or parochial school is eligible to attend first grade in Kansas, regardless of age.
Enrollment Requirements. Bring to enrollment the child’s Social Security number, birth certificate (kindergarten and first-grade only), immunization record, report cards from last school attended, any special education records you have, completed physical form if new to Kansas schools and age 8 or younger.
Immunization Requirements. Kansas law requires that any child entering school in Kansas for the first time must have the following immunizations: 5DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), 4 Polio and 2 MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), unless certification from a licensed physician states the physical condition of the child to be such that the test and/or immunization would seriously endanger his or her life or health or a written objection on religious grounds is given.
In addition, immunizations against varicella (Chickenpox) and hepatitits B are required for all students entering Kindergarten thru Grade 5 (SY08-09). One varicella vaccine is required for all students entering Kindergarten through grade 5. A second catch-up dose of varicella is recommended for all children and adolescents who previously had received one does to improve individual protection against varicella for more rapid impact on school outbreaks. Varicella vaccine will be required unless proof of prior varicella disease is presented to the nurse. HIB (haemophilus influenza Type B), PCV7 (Pneumococcal conjugate), Hepatitits A, MCV4 (Meningococcal), HPV (human papilloma virus) for girls 11 years of age and older only, and influenza immunization are recommended but not required for school entry.
If you arrive in the summer months, children’s shot records can be screened and forms annotated by Munson Army Community Health Center nurses at PAIR Day activities. Otherwise, this form is available at Munson Army Health Center.
Physical Examination Requirement. Kansas law requires all children entering Kansas schools for the first time who are age 8 or younger to have a completed physical form on file with the school in which they are enrolling. The physical must be obtained after Jan. 1 to be accepted for the coming school year. Out-of state forms are acceptable. Physical forms are also available at www.ftlvn.com.
Sports Physicals. Junior high school student who wish to participate in interschool athletics or cheerleading are required to obtain a physical.This physical exam must be taken after May 1 of each academic year. The results of the physical exam and the physician’s statement must be documented on Kansas State High School Activities Association Form, which is available at www.ftlvn.com. Out-of-state forms will be accepted
and attached to the Kansas forms, which must be signed by the student and parents.

Fort Leavenworth schools are considered to be among the best in the nation and at the top of the educational system in Kansas.
The Fort Leavenworth School District is a Kansas state unified school district under the supervision of the Kansas State Department of Education. It is not a part of any Army or DoD school system. For any information, contact the district superintendent’s office, at (913) 651-7373.
School Calendar. The school year normally begins in mid-August and ends in late May. The annual school calendar is coordinated with the Command and General Staff Officer Course calendar. Vacation periods are coordinated, and Fort Leavenworth schools end before CGSS graduation.
Enrollment. Students residing on the military or federal penitentiary reservations are eligible to attend the post schools. Children arriving during the summer can be registered during enrollment day at their neighborhood school in early August. Those arriving during the school year can go directly to the school to enroll.
Students living off post are eligible to attend Fort Leavenworth schools with a letter from Fort Leavenworth Frontier Heritage Communities ensuring a home on post will be made available. Parents must provide transportation. The Board of Education and Superintendent may allow nonresident enrollment in other circumstances, which are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Kansas residency is required.
Accreditation. All Fort Leavenworth schools are fully accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and also by the North Central Association Commission on Schools.
Facilities. The post’s three elementary schools and one junior high school are modern and well equipped with cafeterias, libraries, music rooms, gymnasiums, and special rooms to meet the needs of the curriculum. Each school has fully equipped computer learning centers offering hands-on experiences to all students.
Special Services. The Fort Leavenworth School District participates in a six-district special education cooperative. Eligible students can receive speech therapy, school psychological services, and personal and social adjustment assistance. Specialized teachers provide services for the hearing impaired, for the orthopedically handicapped, and for gifted children. Programs are available for the educable mentally handicapped, and for the severely multiple handicapped. Learning disabilities resource rooms, classrooms for occupational therapy, and hospital and homebound instruction are also available. Kansas Guidelines for Gifted Education. Criteria for placement in the gifted program vary from state to state, because gifted education is not federally mandated. Sometimes a student will qualify for gifted services in one state and not in another. The minimal requirements in Kansas are a composite rank of not less than the 95 percent on a nationally normed standardized achievement test and a rank of not less than the 97 percent on a standardized individualized intelligence test. Patton Junior High School. Academic opportunities are complemented by Student Council, yearbook, football, basketball, track, volleyball, wrestling, cheerleading and pep club.
Transportation. Most Fort Leavenworth elementary students walk to their neighborhood school. Some students attending Eisenhower Elementary are given free bus service to school because they live too far away to walk to school. The majority of Patton Junior High students receive free busing to school also because of their distance from school. Students living in Normandy and Osage Village are within walking distance to Patton.
Senior high school students who reside on post can receive bus service to Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth. The post Transportation Office coordinates this service and can be reached at 684-5637.
The Leavenworth Public Schools include numerous elementary schools for kindergarten through fifth grade, two middle schools for grades six through eight, and Leavenworth High School for grades nine through 12. Call the district administrative offices for more

Accreditation. All schools in the Leavenworth School District maintain the highest accreditation granted by the state of Kansas. Leavenworth High School is a member of the North Central Association, which accredits Midwestern high schools. The high school has a 6-A classification, granted for the largest schools by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
Enrollment. Enrollment is typically scheduled during the second week in August at the schools. All schools in the district open the first week in August to answer questions about enrollment.
Leavenworth High School is open throughout the summer. Make an appointment with a counselor to complete high school enrollment by phoning the school at (913) 684-1550.
Parents of all Leavenworth schools students are asked to pay textbook and materials fees at the time of enrollment. In addition, class fees are charged for certain classes at the high school and middle schools. These fees are annually reviewed and approved by the Board of Education, and vary with grade level. There are many parochial and private schools offering education from pre-school to high school in the Leavenworth area.

The Lansing School District includes an elementary school for kindergarten through third grade, a separate school for fourth grade, one for fifth grade, a middle school for grades six through eight, and a high school. Accreditation. All schools are fully accredited and the Lansing District is a member of the Leavenworth County Special Education Cooperative.
Enrollment. August enrollment dates are announced in local papers, and students arriving mid-year can be registered at the school they will be attending.
Platte City Area Schools include an elementary school for kindergarten through second grade, intermediate for third and fourth grades, middle school for grades five through eight, and high school. Enrollment for the Weston schools, serving kindergarten through 12th grade, is announced in the local newspapers in August. Write to the Superintendent’s Office at 1103 Washington St., Weston MO 64098, or call (816) 640-2236.
The Family Support Center, at Kansas and Grant avenues, is the site of Fort Leavenworth’s Child Development Center and the Central Enrollment and Registration Office. CYS offer a full range of childcare programs to meet the needs of eligible patrons living on and off post. CYS cares for children between the ages of six weeks and 12 years. Phone 684-5135/5137 for information about any of these services.
Enrollment Requirements: CYS offers a one-stop Central Registry for all of its programs in the Child Development Center. Current immunization records are required for children to attend CYS programs, as well as a physical exam within 30 days of enrollment.

Full-day care is available at the Child Development Center for infants, toddlers and preschoolers requiring more than six care hours per day. Full-day care hours are Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Hourly care is offered Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with extended hours on Monday and Wednesday to 6 p.m. Reservations for hourly care can be made three months in advance by calling 684-9351.
Family Child Care (FCC) providers offer high quality childcare in a home-based setting. The CYS sponsors and trains FCC providers who offer the widest variety of services: full-day, hourly, evening and weekend care. Contact the FCC Director at 684-5129.
CYS Outreach Services assist parents with information about all area childcare programs. These include childcare centers, preschools, family childcare homes, and facilities serving special-needs children. Call 684-5135.
Physical Examination Requirements. The state of Kansas requires that a child entering into a day-care school or preschool have a physical exam and current immunizations. The certification form, Kansas Department of Health and Environment Form HA-1, is available at the post Family Support Center and other preschools.
Available Programs. A number of preschool programs are offered in the Leavenworth area, with various age groups and curriculum approaches. The resource and referral service of the post Child and Youth Services can offer information about its preschool program and off-post preschools.
The Fort Leavenworth CYS Preschool Program is offered at the Child Development Center for children who are 3 years old. Programs include five-hour sessions three or five days per week, and a three-hour, two-day per week program.
Patrons may go on the waiting list for the next year’s preschool program at any time. Returning students have first priority. Patrons will be notified of classes in July. Children are accepted throughout the year on a space available basis. Birth certificates, military ID, and a Leave and Earning Statement are required to determine eligibility for the program.
The School Age Services provide before and after-school care for first- through sixth-grade children attending Fort Leavenworth schools. Before-school, after-school and non-school day care is offered at Patch Community Center, 320 Pope Ave. Fees are based on total family income. SAS also offers a Homework and Computer Center along with enrichment classes and 4-H Club throughout the year. Contact the SAS office at 684-7527 for further information.
The Harrold Youth Center on Biddle Boulevard is part of Child and Youth Services and has a wide variety of youth-oriented activities on Fort Leavenworth.
The center itself houses a 9,000-square-foot multipurpose gym, a dance studio, large screen TV room, billiards room, snack bar and dining area, Boy’s and Girl’s Club and 4-H Club activities, and a computer/technology center.
Harrold Youth Center is open Monday through Saturday for all youths in fifth through 12th grade, with with a free after-school program for sixth- through ninth-graders and “teen only” hours to accommodate older youth. The program picks up youth after school at the on-post schools. Center registration is required for participation in center activities.

The center sponsors age-appropriate activities such as monthly movies, dances, trips and special events. Youth leadership potential is encouraged through the Youth-to-Youth Sponsorship Club, Teen Discovery, and Keystone (teens) and Torch (pre-teens) clubs.
The Fort Leavenworth SKIES program offers a wide variety of instructional classes to include music, dance, gymnastics, martial arts, art, cooking, academic support, self-defense clinics and much more. Call the Instruction Program Specialist at 684-3207/3206 for more information.
Team Sports. Approximately 3,000 youth participate annually in Fort Leavenworth Youth Sports, thanks to the efforts of about 250 volunteer coaches from the community. YS-sponsored team sports include spring and fall soccer, third- through sixth-grade flag
football, wrestling, basketball, tee ball, baseball, girls’ softball, and track and field. Registration for fall sports begins in early August and is accepted at PAIR Day. Check the Fort Leavenworth Lamp for announcements of sports registration, or call the Youth Sports office at Patch Community Center, 684-7525.
Youth Sports requires that participants have a current physical exam.
Swimming. Swimming instruction is offered year-round at Harney Pool. The Lancers Swim Team, for youth up to 18 years of age, encourages and supports the swimming enthusiast. Two outdoor pools are available June through early September.
Enthusiastic adult volunteers and on-post campsites and permanent meeting places support a very active Scouting program on Fort Leavenworth for Boy and Girl Scouts. PAIR Day offers registration opportunities for Daisies, Brownies and Girl Scouts, Cub and Boy Scouts, and Explorers.
