Post Activities Information and Registration Day is a special one-day opportunity to sign up for family and individual activities. EVERYONE is invited to PAIR Day. Representatives from over 100 private organizations, special interest groups, sports teams and more will give information and help you register to participate.
Notices on the Kansas Avenue marquee, on Channel 2 and in the Fort Leavenworth Lamp will alert you to the date and the location.
The Combined Arms Research Library (CARL) is a comprehensive reference and research center in the south wing of Eisenhower Hall. The library supports the Command and General Staff College, the research of the Combined Arms Center, family members, residents and employees of Fort Leavenworth, retirees, and military scholars worldwide.
The library holds more than 300,000 books, as well as large collections of other media such as microfilm, and video and audio tapes. CARL provides access to the Internet and a large number of commercial and government databases. Primary emphasis in the collections is military art and science and military history. Other significant subject areas covered in depth include general history, international relations and leadership as well as archival and unique special collections typical of a large research library.
A general collection (previously the Post Library), composed of fiction, children’s,
and popular nonfiction works, is incorporated into CARL. Children’s story hours are offered weekly.
Fitz Lee Theater on Grant Avenue shows movies on Friday and Saturday evenings, plus occasional matinees. Movie schedules are available in the Fort Leavenworth Lamp, at the theater and PX, or by calling 684-4683.
Enjoy your favorite craft or learn a new one at Arts, Crafts and Tickets in Truesdell Hall on the corner of Stimson and Grant avenues. The center offers a variety of classes including stained glass and framing for adults. Call 684-3373.
ACT also specializes in providing information about many tourist attractions. The office sells tickets to major league sports events, theater productions, amusement parks in the surrounding area, and major theme parks throughout the United States. ACT will make your hotel reservations and get you familiar with Army recreational facilities throughout the world. Discounts are often available. Call 684-2580.
ACT also serves as the Recreational Vehicle Storage Office, is the proponent office for the Used Vehicle Lot, and sells Kansas hunting and fishing licenses. The Hunt Lodge and the post’s covered picnic pavilions can be reserved by contacting ACT at 684-2580.
Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) enhances the quality of life, provides leisure activities and promotes community service for single Soldiers, single parents and unaccompanied Soldiers. For more information, call 684-1707.
The Fort Leavenworth Army Flying Activity is a self-sustaining NAF activity.
The activity has successfully trained pilots for private, instrument, commercial and instructor ratings. Personally-owned aircraft can be hangared
or tied down at the airfield. The Flying Activity also has several aircraft that can be rented for training and personal travel. For additional information, call 651-6808.
The Hunt Club provides facilities and events for families to enjoy horse sports. Fox hunts – just for the chase! – are conducted from
September through April. The club is active throughout the year with horse shows, riding instruction, horse and hound training, and other
riding and social events.
The Fort Leavenworth Hunt is one of three active military foxhunts in the world. The other two are the Artillery Hunt at Fort Sill, Okla., and the Royal Artillery Hunt in Great Britain. Call 684-8565 for more information.
The Fort Leavenworth Stables is an MWR activity open to active and retired military, DoD civilians, and their family members. The Stables activity offers year-round boarding with 78 stalls, two outdoor arenas, an indoor arena and outside trails for your equestrian needs. Visit the stables on Warehouse Road to apply and learn about vaccination requirements, or call the stable manager at 651-7307.
Fishing is allowed in Smith and Merritt Lakes adjacent Grant Avenue near the Buffalo Soldier Monument. You must possess a Kansas Fishing License to fish in Fort Leavenworth lakes, unless under 16 years of age. Catch limits are posted at the lakes.
The Rod and Gun Club is open to active and retired military, DoD civilians and family members. The club sponsors organized seasonal hunting and fishing events and conducts meetings the second Wednesday of each month, with a “cook your own steak” social hour. The Rod and Gun Club sponsors an annual eight-hour hunter safety course in late summer. A hunter safety course is required for a hunting license for those born on or after July 1, 1957.
All hunters must have a valid Kansas hunting license in their possession while hunting, and comply with state and installation regulations. All on-post hunters must attend a hunting briefing and receive an installation hunting pass. On-post hunters may use any weapons legal for hunting in Kansas, except pistols. Black powder and modern rifles may only be used in limited areas for specified hunts. Hunters must attend a hunting briefing at the Directorate of Plans, Training and Mobilization before hunting on the Fort Leavenworth reservation. Contact the DPTM at 684-0056 for information on designated hunting areas and hunting regulations.
Kinder Small Arms Range is available for firing personally owned weapons when the range is not in use for military training. High power
rifles cannot be used on the range. Contact the Directorate of Plans, Training and Mobilization at 684-0056 about the required safety class
and range procedures.
The Brunner Skeet and Trap Range is located on Sheridan Drive, easily recognized while driving north from the intersection of Hancock Avenue and Sheridan Drive. The club offers a full range of shotgun shooting programs throughout the year for new and experienced shooters. Monthly Fun Shoots are held for the entire family to build practical shooting skills, and periodic registered skeet tournaments are held to promote competitive shooting. Call 651-8132.
Swimming is a year-round activity in Harney Pool, with scheduled military lap swimming, family swimming and instruction for all ages. The outdoor pools on Hancock and Grant are open from early June through Labor Day. Call the Harney Pool Office at 684-2187 for information about pool fees, passes and classes.
The Sports Office in 600 Thomas Ave. can help and advise with unit-level sports programs, at 684-1702. Gruber Fitness Center is equipped for handball, racquetball, squash, basketball, volleyball, exercise and aerobics, powerlifting and sauna. Harney Sports Complex has two basketball courts, five racquetball courts, one walleyball court and a 25-yard indoor pool. Services include Red Cross Learn to Swim classes, water aerobics and private swimming lessons.
The newly renovated Strikes Zone Bowling Center offers 16 lanes of bowling along with a snack bar and pro shop. Check out the adult and youth league programs, as well as Rock-N-Glow nights. Call 684-BOWL or 684-2695.
Three softball diamonds, two football fields, eight soccer game fields (and numerous practice fields) and two lighted tennis courts keep many Fort Leavenworth Soldiers and family members active.
Trails West Golf Course features 190 acres of open meadows, tree-lined zoysia fairways and bent grass greens. Golfers of varying skill levels will enjoy this 18-hole regulation course. Other features include a clubhouse, proshop, lighted driving range, two practice putting greens, ladies’ and men’s locker rooms and Fairway Grille. Clinics are given during the spring, summer and fall for beginning golfers. Call 651-7176.
